Overthinking things- A self-destructive habit

  • Overthinking happens when you can’t stop wondering why something happened. You keep thinking about it, trying to make sense of it, even if it’s out of your control. This can disturb your peace of mind and affect your body too.

Overthinking also means getting lost in vague fears about a situation in your life, which actually has not yet happened. Your mind starts running wild and creates disastrous scenarios about what could happen if you did something or did not do something.

Negative thoughts start buzzing around in your mind like an alarm bell. This happens when the mind is vulnerable and you cannot think clearly. And this is when you start developing the self-destructive habit of overthinking things.

To shoo these negative thoughts off, you need to catch them quickly.

Stop, Drop, and Breathe. When you catch yourself overthinking, stop the thought, drop the worry, and take a few deep breaths.

You need to train your mind to revisit a situation with some level-headed thinking. I call it RETHINKING WITH DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES. Once you start saying, stop! to your negative thoughts, you will realize that most of the time the issue is very small, rather nothing at all. But your mind thinks of it and makes a mountain out of the molehill.

Another way that works is to set a Worry Time. Allocate a specific time slot for worrying. This may sound funny, but it works, as you tend to realize that the thing you are overthinking about is not worth setting a time for.

The best trick to avoid overthinking is to ask yourself, What is the worst that could happen? Really, what could happen?

Trust me, your mind will give you the answers, and you will figure out that you can think of solutions to that so-called ‘unlikely situation’, if at all it happens. In reality, what happens is usually not as bad as what your negative thinking makes you think of.

If you make a habit of using these tricks, it will save you from a lot of misery and suffering.

Remember, it takes practice to break the habit of overthinking. Be patient and consistent in using these tricks to help you shift your mindset. Every small step you take towards mindful thinking is a victory in itself. So, start today—take a deep breath, shift your perspective, and reclaim your peace of mind. Your thoughts are powerful, but your ability to change them is even stronger.
